Lot Description
1814 Capped Bust Dime. JR-3. Rarity-2. Large Date. MS-67 (NGC). Writing in the 1984 book Early United States Dimes: 1796-1837, the John Reich Collectors Society states that the finest example of the 1814 JR-3 with which they are familiar is the coin that sold as lot 728 in Stack's May 1975 Cornell University-Oglethorpe University Sale. The NGC MS-67 that we are offering here may be the same coin, although plate matching is inconclusive. What we believe, however, is that this piece is probably Condition Census #1 for the issue regardless of whether or not it is the Cornell-Oglethorpe specimen.
An attractively original Superb Gem, both sides reveal subtle powder-blue and reddish-champagne highlights to dominant silver-gray patina. The strike is suitably bold for the die marriage, especially on the reverse, and there are no abrasions of note apart from a wispy graze in the right-obverse field that should serve as a useful pedigree marker. A lovely coin that is destined for inclusion in the finest Capped Bust Dime set.
