Lot Description
Gem RB Proof 1841 Cent. 1841 Braided Hair 1¢. N-1. Rarity-5. Proof-65 RB PCGS. A classic example of mid-19th Century Proof copper coinage, the present specimen is tied for finest RB of the variety certified by PCGS, see below. This glossy deep orange-red Proof is alive with varied chocolate, navy, and rose iridescent highlights. The fields are reflective beneath the blanketing toning, and the devices are needle-sharp on both sides. Newcomb-1 of this year is a Proof-only die combination. Though the exact number struck is lost to history, PCGS suggests perhaps 20-30 examples can be accounted for today, and the Bowers-Whitman reference drives that number up to 45-60 pieces, a figure that jibes best with the Rarity-5 rating. Absolutely choice for the grade, and readily among the finest Proofs extant of the date. PCGS Population: 4 RB; none finer. There are two Proof-66 BN specimens, one of those designated “+” with none finer. PCGS #1953
