1924-D Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. MS-62 (NGC). This handsome BU example exhibits blended rose and honey-gold patina to both sides. Sharply struck with no significant handling marks, a bit more vibrancy to the luster may have secured a Choice Mint State grade from NGC. Far scarcer in numismatic circles than a mintage of 3,049,500 pieces might imply, the 1924-D is one of many late date Saint-Gaudens double eagles that suffered a high rate or attrition through melting during the late 1930s. Several thousand examples were exported, however, and repatriations in recent decades account for the vast majority of survivors.
