Lot Description
Lot 345 1853 N-4 R3+ Repunched 3 PCGS graded MS64 Brown.Frosty light olive and tan with generous traces of faded mint red showing on both sides, particularly on the reverse. The surfaces are lustrous and this cent would have excellent eye appeal except for two spots of greenish verdigris on the obverse: one in the dentils at star 3 and another in the dentils under the 3. There are a few additional tiny specks of carbon elsewhere on the obverse but they are not distracting. These spots were not significant enough to deter the graders at PCGS and the verdigris may be removable. EDS, die state a. The fine die lines from the dentils over the N in UNITED are clear and the repunching at the top of the 3 is bold. Our grade is mint state sharpness net AU58+(perhaps better if the specks of verdigris were removed) and CC#6 in the Grellman census. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; none finer.Estimated Value $700 - UP Ex Dustin Massie 9/11/2004-Colonel Steven K. Ellsworth Collection.
