Lot Description

1866-S Liberty Half Eagle. Motto. EF-40 (PCGS). Attractive orange-gold hues of a dusky nature which is pleasing to the eye. Average surfaces as these San Francisco half eagles entered hard service in circulation as soon as they were struck. A mere 34,920 pieces were struck, from which a tiny number survive today. The second 6 in the date is larger than the first, and most of these show a raised die line through the U of TRUST on the reverse. There were the first half eagles coined with the new Motto on the reverse, adopted for coinage in 1866.
