- Pewter gray fields support lighter silver gray motifs on both sides of this universally bold Fine-grade example. A tad glossy in texture with wispy handling marks, although nicer in hand than most well circulated survivors of this challenging early silver series. The JR-1 is the only die pairing of the 1798-dated dime issue that corresponds to both the overdate obverse and 16-star reverse. This reverse die was first used to strike 1797 BD-1 quarter eagles, a remarkable example of maximizing good die steel on the part of the early U.S. Mint.
