- Legend Rare Coin Auctions is proud and honored to offer the SINGLE FINEST example of this important, conditionally RARE, early KEY DATE Walker. The quality and eye appeal are off the charts! The 1918-D, despite a mintage of over 3.8 million pieces is the third most challenging issue of the entire Walking Liberty Half Dollar series to find at the GEM level or finer ( In GEM Mint State condition, only the 1919-D and 1921-S are tougher to find in this series, so this 1918-D is held in good company!); at the presently offered TOP GRADE of MS66+ level it is UNIQUE! The reason that this particular date is so difficult to find in gem mirrors that of the 1919-D, these were widely distributed in the midwest at the time of issue, few were saved by contemporary numismatists. The post World War I economy fell into a deep recession in 1921, so mintages fell dramatically, and coins that were in circulation remained there. This incredible SUPERB GEM example displays a bold uniform satiny luster has a thick, creamy, rich mint frost. Mainly pearly-silver with a blush of the softest pale champagne hue, the reverse possesses a touch of olive-tan at the right periphery. The devices are well formed and generally well struck; Liberty's head and hand are well formed, though some minor weakness is noted on some of the drapery lines and central feather details on the reverse. A strong glass will, after a long period of intense scrutiny, reveal a few tiny traces of contact, these are generally limited to non focal areas and are well hidden. We also note a tiny fleck or two which attest to this coin's SUPERB originality. PCGS 3, NGC 3, CAC 1. This is the ONLY PCGS MS66+ graded and there are NONE FINER! This is an AMAZING coin that is worthy of placement in the FINEST of all Walking Liberty half dollar sets. This coin is PEERLESS for the date and will certainly attract fierce bidding and a world RECORD auction price. Unpriced in the PCGS Price Guide at the MS66+ level. This is a MONSTER deserving of an AMAZING set. Good luck! Cert. Number 41286090.00 PCGS # 6575.00
