Description du lot
Ex Simpson Collection, as noted on the insert. Arguably the FINEST KNOWN example of this VERY challenging Rarity-7+ die trial using regular 1869 Proof half dollar dies, struck in copper with a reeded edge. These were sold to contemporary collectors in off-metal Proof Sets. This GEM is the finest graded in any designation at either service. Brick red in the centers, deepening to a violet-blue at the periphery. Sharply struck and essentially flawless, this is an AMAZING looking example. PCGS 1, NGC 0. WAY rarer than the regular Proof 1869 half dollar at essentially zero premium! This coin sold in the 2021 ANA auction for $4,320 and the current Collectors Universe value is listed at $6,500. The only other RB to ever sell was an NGC PR64 RB that sold back in February 1992! This is a VERY RARE and undervalued Pattern half dollar worthy of a very strong bid! Cert.
