This is a very scarce R-4+ RED BOOK variety that is rarely offered in auction. You can clearly see why this variety is so scarce, clearly the dies broke early on with extensive die cracks encircling the obverse. The present coin was struck on a neat, defective planchet, with fissures present. These were caused by impurities in the copper when the planchet was being rolled. A very nice even milk chocolate coloration with some olive highlights add to the eye appeal. PCGS 4, NGC 1. The last one to sell brought $3,525 in a September 2016 auction, and that one had some significant marks that this one does not.
