Lot Description
Lot 138 1822 N-12 R4 PCGS graded MS63 Brown.Frosty medium brown and light olive with a hint of light bluish steel overtone. Satiny mint luster covers the fields and protected areas and the eye appeal is excellent. The only notable marks are a diagonal nick in the field under the chin and a couple splashes of slightly darker brown toning under ENT in CENT. Nicely struck showing crisp hair details and full radial lines in all but the first 2 stars. E-MDS. The fields on the obverse are smooth and slightly reflective, and the fine die crack from the dentils through star 7 extends down the portrait to the bust tip where it fades away. A wonderful example of this tough die variety. Graded MS60 net AU50 and tied for CC#5 in the Noyes census, his photo #25223. Bland says MS60 and tied for CC#2. Our grade is AU58. This is the Newcomb plate coin for the variety in his reference on the cents of 1816-1857 (Plates III & IV). Comes with a very nice provenance. The attribution and Newcomb-Ahumada provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS #36745. Pop 1; only 1 example graded higher in 64 at PCGS for the variety. Estimated Value $6,000 - UP Ex Dr. George P. French (acquired by Dr. French prior to the 1914 ANS Exhibition), B. Max Mehl 1929 FPL, lot 441-Howard R. Newcomb, J. C.
