Lot Description
1845-D Liberty Quarter Eagle. Winter 6-I, the only known dies. MS-64 (PCGS). After being discovered among the shipwreck of S.S. New York and undergoing expert conservation, this remarkable near-Gem vaulted to the apex of Condition Census for the 1845-D Quarter Eagle. In fact, we have recent technological advances in underwater search and salvage to thank for the existence of some truly remarkable 19th century United States gold coins. Softly frosted in texture with bright yellow-gold color, this coin's appearance is truly memorable. There are no abrasions of note, and a sharp strike further enhances already strong eye appeal.
The 1845-D (19,460 pieces produced) is similar in overall rarity to the 1844-D. It is rarer in high grades, however, and remains highly elusive in Mint State. In fact, we are aware of only one or two high-quality examples having come to light in recent years, either from the S.S. New York shipwreck or any other source.
