- One of the "middle dates" in the Walking Liberty half dollar series, the 1935-D lacks the recognition and desirability of the early issues from 1916 to 1933, and the popularity of the "short set" issues of 1941 to 1947. As series specialists know all too well, however, the 1935-D is a scarce and conditionally challenging issue that ranks third in both absolute and high grade Mint State rarity among the 19 "middle date" issues. Most are poorly struck and, just as unfortunate, many are marred by noticeable bag marks. Not so this upper end Gem. Its smooth, softly frosted surfaces are exceptionally well composed and deliver bold to sharp detail throughout the design. Brilliant apart from the lightest silvery tinting, this is a beautiful top-of-the-pop Gem whose offering in this sale represents a fleeting opportunity for astute Walking Liberty half dollar collectors.
