Lot Description

Breen Die State III. Blended autumn-orange brown and steely olive-copper patina on surfaces that show considerable good gloss for the assigned grade. Wear is extensive, typical for the grade, but it is also even and has left most major design elements bold. The only exceptions are the letters along the upper reverse border, although the words STATES OF are still discernible with patience. Microgranularity is mostly confined to the fields, and none of the scattered marks are sizeable or otherwise significant, especially at the assigned grade level. Noyes grades this piece EAC VG7 net Good-5 and rank it tied for CC#15 in his census. The 2000 Breen large cent encyclopedia observes that "McGirk was apparently the first to identify the variety as very rare."
