- Full, billowy satin luster mingles with warm wheat-gold color on both sides of this sharply defined and visually appealing example. The circulation strike 1896 has a recorded mintage of 792,535 pieces, down more than one million coins from the previous year's production figure at Philadelphia. As is typical, much of the mintage was shipped overseas in business and other transactions. Mint State coins have been coming back to America's shores for decades, and our current estimate for such examples is in the range of 10,000 to 16,000 or more coins. With a generous population, the 1896 is particularly popular for Mint State type purposes, and this premium quality BU example would do particularly well in this regard.
