Lot Description
A satiny and vibrant example that will appeal to Mint State type collectors and Liberty Seated dollar specialists alike. Otherwise brilliant surfaces exhibit subtle golden-russet peripheral highlights that are a bit more prevalent on the reverse. The strike is suitably bold for this challenging type. <p>The 1870 is the first silver dollar produced since the 1840s that saw appreciable domestic circulation at the time of issue. Many examples of this 415,000-piece delivery were certainly exported to the Orient, but enough remained within the United States that the issue numbers among the more frequently encountered of the Liberty Seated, Motto type in today's market. On the other hand, the 1870 is rarer in an absolute sense than the higher mintage 1871 and 1872, and it is particularly scarce in Mint State, as here.
