Obv: Chief Engraver James Barton Longacre's Indian Princess motif with no stars around the border. Liberty is seated left wearing a Native American headdress, her left hand resting atop a globe inscribed LIBERTY and her right hand supporting a liberty pole. Two flags are behind the portrait, and the date 1871 is below. Rev: The same design that the Mint used to strike regular issue 1871 Liberty Seated dimes. A deeply and richly toned specimen with hints of pinkish-rose and powder blue backlighting dominant charcoal-mauve patina. Direct lighting calls forth some semblance of a cameo finish, while full strike detail is readily appreciable at all viewing angles.
This type was deliberately made for sale to contemporary collectors as part of silver Proof sets featuring all denominations from the half dime through dollar. Fewer than half a dozen examples of Judd-1077 are believed extant, including this handsome Gem, which is incorrectly listed as NGC Proof-66 on the uspatterns.com website.
