Lot Description
1838-O Liberty Seated Half Dime. No Stars. V-1. MS-62 (NGC). A deeply lustrous steel-gray specimen with boldly rendered design motifs and excellent all-around eye appeal for the grade. A rich array of smoky blue and rose iridescence graces both sides. One of just 70,000 examples of the denomination struck in New Orleans -- the no stars obverse type was used in our southernmost mint in 1838 because the new obverse dies with stars added were not shipped in a timely enough manner to enable their use in coinage. This is a stand-alone type within the Liberty Seated half dime series.Choice for the grade and, despite its MS-62 designation, among the finest nine examples of the date seen thus far by NGC. NGC Census: 3; 6 finer (MS-65 finest). PCGS# 4314. NGC Census: 3; 6 finer (MS-65 finest).
