Lot Description

This is very high end for the assigned grade example of this popular Civil War era gold coin. While many of the gold coins of the era are low mintage or very rare in high grade, the 1861 quarter eagle is relatively available even in CHOICE Mint State and this one has a great look. A strong luster with hints of Prooflike flash and reflection beam all over. An early die state with planchet roller marks and die striations seen in the fields. The devices are crisp and the surfaces are devoid of serious contact that would impair the great eye appeal. PCGS 217, NGC 64, CAC 40. Most recent NGC/CAC example sold seemingly ages ago in February 2019. More recently, a PCGS/CAC example sold in April 2022 for $2,520, well above the published levels.
