- Tompkins Die Stage 5/5, Rea et al. Die State b. A richly and originally toned example awash in a bold blend of golden-gray and steely-charcoal with underlying iridescence of champagne-gold and powder blue. The fields glow with softly frosted luster as the coin dips into a light, while a boldly to sharply executed strike is easy to appreciate at all viewing angles. Handsome Choice AU quality for this very late state of the 1834 Browning-1 pairing, both sides with extensive cracks, the obverse with multiple sets of clash marks, and the reverse severely lapped to efface the repunching in the legend, which simultaneously weakened several peripheral features, most noticeably the letter M in AMERICA and the olive branch. The reverse is rotated approximately 30 degrees clockwise from normal coin alignment.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: One of several coins acquired at the 2006 Jules Reiver sale. Over the last 40 years this LDS coin was in only two collections: Jules Reiver's and mine.
