- Obv: Charles E. Barber's Liberty Head portrait, used on the regular issue nickel five-cent piece from 1883 to 1912. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is around the border, and the date 1883 is below. Rev: The composition 75 N. / 25 C. is centered within a wreath of corn and cotton. The denomination is divided FIVE above, CENTS below, with 13 stars arranged around the border, seven left and six right. As described by the uspatterns.com website: "This is one of 4 patterns for this year using different alloys of nickel and/or copper showing their composition on the reverse within the wreath." Judd-1707, offered here, is traditionally described as "pure nickel" because the composition is magnetic, although most appear to be the stated alloy of 75% nickel, 25% copper. The Newman specimen is a lovely Gem Cameo Proof with a dusting of pale silvery tinting to smartly impressed, nicely contrasted surfaces.
