A.C.E. Collection. Breen-6925. Mintage: 16,606. 26 graded AU-58. 5 higher at NGC. Highly elusive at any AU grade level, the 1857 is an extremely rare gold eagle entry the instant it crosses into mint-state territory, placing heavy demand upon well-preserved circulated coins like this. Despite two points of touch-friction, the presentation still seems to retain all aspects of a semi-prooflike strike, including somewhat reflective fields and a breath of cameo contrast. A brief die line connects 57 in the date, and Breen postulated it as the remnants of an overdate. An intriguing coin on multiple levels.
