Lot Description
Tompkins Die Stage 1/1, Rea et al. Die State P. The L counterpart to the two E counterstamp 1815 quarters in the Tompkins Reference Collection offered above, this coin also shows no flattening or other distortion to the lower reverse opposite the L. It is a lightly and attractively toned Choice AU with dominant golden-gray patina that gives way to blushes of orange-apricot iridescence at the right borders. Sharply to fully struck in most areas with much softly frosted luster on pleasingly smooth surfaces.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: The rarer of the two stamps found on the 1815s (by a factor of four) and a reminder of my good friendship and collaboration with the knowledgeable numismatic literature dealer Karl Moulton. Karl gave me this coin in payment for helping him with his opus on John J. Ford. Was it worth the five years I spent working on the project? It certainly was to me as I would have done it for free.
