- Tompkins Die Stage 5/3, Rea et al. Die State b (Stage 2), Rarity-7+. A very rare middle state of the 1825/4/2 Browning-3 dies, the prominent reverse crack from the border to the D in UNITED, extends back along the bases of the letters ETINU, but does not loop back to the border before the U. A branch of this crack can also be seen from the base of the D to the left end of the scroll. This light silver gray example retains bold outline definition to all major design elements, although the borders on both sides have been largely lost to wear.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: One of two B-3 examples I purchased from Larry Briggs over the years and certainly the scarcer of this interesting progression of the eventual large cud that develops on this reverse die.
