<strong>Obv:</strong> A bust of Liberty faces left, the portrait very similar to that used on regular-issue nickel three-cent pieces. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is around the border and the date 1868 is below. <strong>Rev:</strong> Also similar to the regular-issue nickel three-cent piece design with a Roman numeral III set within a laurel wreath. Lightly toned in iridescent pinkish-silver, this is a smartly impressed Gem with reflective fields supporting softly frosted devices. One of several one cent, nickel three-cent and nickel five-cent patterns produced in 1868 featuring an obverse portrait similar to that used on the regular issue nickel three-cent piece. These were sold to contemporary collectors as part of pattern Proof sets.
