Circulated Proof 1901 Eagle. 1901 Gold $10. Proof-55 PCGS. The crinkly textured fields and frosty motifs of this modestly circulated Proof eagle, one of 85 examples of the date struck in the format, show innumerable dings and hairlines from a short but obviously arduous journey through pocket change. The marks are heaviest on the obverse. Trophy coins such as Proofs were often the first to go when hard times hit a family, and this piece may have suffered that fate. However, a sharp-eyed collector pulled it from circulation before it became totally unidentifiable as a Proof and placed it aside for posterity. PCGS #8841
