Lot Description
1865 Pattern Liberty Double Eagle. Judd-453 Gilt, Pollock-526. Rarity-6+. Gilt Copper. Reeded Edge. Proof-62 (NGC). Transitional issue. From the regular-issue obverse die of the year coupled with the reverse of the following year, 1866, with IN GOD WE TRUST above the eagle in a halo of 13 stars. The uspatterns.com website notes the following regarding this pattern double eagle: "These are believed to have been struck in 1865 although they may also have been restruck in the early 1870s...over a dozen are believed known in copper as illustrated, several of which have been gilt." Fully impressed, otherwise olive-gold surfaces reveal subtle rose-brown undertones at certain angles -- evidence of the underlying copper. Freedom from sizeable contact marks and significant hairlining are impressive attributes given the Proof-62 grade assigned by NGC, although we do note slight muting to the overall finish. Even so, modest mirrors are evident in the fields as the coin dips into a light. We are pleased to offer this attractive gilt double eagle pattern, as its rarity is commensurate with its desirability.
Incorrectly attributed as Judd-453a on the NGC insert.
