- 1897-S Barber Quarter. MS-64 (PCGS). CAC.
Handsome pearl gray iridescence blends with soft satin luster on both sides of this sharply struck and carefully preserved near-Gem. In the second rarity tier among Barber quarters after the 1896-S/1901-S/1913-S trio, the 1897-S has a limited mintage of 542,229 pieces. Most examples entered circulation without fanfare, where they were either lost or heavily worn. Mint State survivors are scarce to rare in all grades.
