- Lot Description
- 1871-H Round 50¢. BG-1041. Liberty Head. Rarity-6. MS-62 PCGS. OGL. This deep honey-gold specimen enjoys prooflike reflectivity, strong luster, and wisps of rose and peach iridescence. Obverse strike fairly bold, reverse weak throughout as typical. Bob Leonard, lead author in the second edition of the Breen-Gillio reference, noted that the Hershfield & Mitchell issues, BG-1041 through 1046, “are very rare owing to federal suppression, August 1871;” the PCGS data seemingly confirms Leonard’s observation. A great opportunity for an advanced California Small Denomination gold specialist. Housed in an old-style green label PCGS holder with frame.
Maker: Hershfield & Mitchell, Leavenworth, Kansas.
Edge: Plain.
Die Alignment: 180 degrees or coin turn.
Die State: the only recorded state.
PCGS Population: 4; 3 finer (all MS-63).
PCGS #10870
