- The 1851 half dime offers a surprising challenge among pre-Civil War Liberty Seated coinage. While a generous total of 781,000 pieces were struck, only about 600 or so survive in all grades. It is thought that a portion of the mintage may have been melted in 1853 at the time of the weight change and the transition to the Arrows design type. Only about 45 examples remain at the Gem level, the majority of which are in grades of MS-65 and MS-66. Our offering of this originally and attractively Superb Gem in NGC MS-67 is truly an important opportunity. Colorfully toned in "Christmas" shades of red and green overall.
