- Tompkins Die Stage 2/1, Rea et al. Die State a. This is the type coin variety for the 1819 Capped Bust quarter, represented here by a lustrous and frosty Mint State example. The surfaces are nicely toned in iridescent reddish-apricot with a blush or two of powder blue around the reverse periphery. The strike is universally bold, and there are no significant marks. A series of planchet drift marks (as made) on both sides are so faint that they require magnification to discern. As with all varieties in this challenging early quarter series, the 1819 Browning-1 is elusive in Mint State. The NorthEast Collection specimen offered here is tied for CC#5 in the 2010 Rea-Peterson-Karoleff-Kovach census.
