Lot Description
One of the most popular of VAMs, the 1888-O Scarface gets its own listing in the Guide Book of United States Coins. So named for the die break that traverses Liberty's portrait, giving her the same sobriquet as famed gangster Al Capone. A scarce and challenging variety that is rarely seen in Mint State. While the grade is limited due to some contact marks, none of these are inconsistent with the MS-62+ grade, and is deserving of its CAC sticker. A pearly silver-gray patina dominates with light touches of champagne gold that come out in a light. As typical for a New Orleans Morgan dollar of the era, the central devices are bluntly struck up, but this one is not pancake flat. An important coin that will be eagerly sought by specialists.
