Lot Description

1869-S Liberty Quarter Eagle. MS-61 (NGC). This frosty honey-gold specimen imparts the initial eye appeal of a finer grade. The bold cartwheel luster is unbroken on the high points, warm olive highlights are apparent in a bright light source, and the devices are as sharp as ever seen for the type and era. Even a glass fails to deliver any marks of substance -- this may well be the finest MS-61 example of the date extant. Though 29,500 examples of the date were struck, it is far more elusive in AU or finer than that modest mintage portrays -- only 16 Mint State examples of the date have been certified by NGC in all grades. Choice and appealing and well worth a premium bid.
