Lot Description
A highly appealing specimen of this scarce Lettered Edge variety. Rich chocolate-brown, an ideal shade, with ruddy tan highlights around the back of Liberty's head and in the area of LIBERTY atop the obverse. The surfaces are hard and smooth with good natural gloss. Nicely struck. The fields are immaculate for the grade with only the most minor contact marks. We note a pair of tiny nicks within Liberty's hair. A very desirable specimen for anyone who seeks a nice VF example of this date or major variety.<p>The cents of 1795 were struck to two different weight standards. Those struck to the heavier 208 grain standard had lettered edges, like their 1794-dated counterparts. The pieces struck on thin 168 grain planchets bore no edge device, nor would any later large cents through the end of the series in 1857.
