Description du lot
Tompkins Die Stage 1/1, Rea et al. Die State P. Rich mauve-gray patina with mottled steel-olive overtones that are more widespread on the obverse. Sharply defined overall with only light marks to hard, softly frosted surfaces that reveal glints of faded mint luster as the coin dips into a light.
The 1818 Browning-10 represents the third and final use of this obverse with a die line at the innermost point of star 2; the reverse is unique to this pairing. Fairly common in an absolute sense, the perfect reverse, as here, is the scarcest die state. The obverse shows bars clashed at Liberty's ear, inherited from the latest state of the 1818 B-9 marriage.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: What a beautiful and original-looking coin. I spent many years searching for a nice EDS of the 1818 B-10 die marriage and this coin fit the bill perfectly.
