- This highly lustrous, aesthetically pleasing Gem is toned in rich, vivid shades of reddish-orange, rose-gray and cobalt blue. Fully lustrous, the surfaces also exhibit a delightful frosty texture. Fully struck and exceptionally smooth for a survivor of an issue that is readily obtainable in circulated grades, but scarce to rare at all Mint State levels.<p>Circulation strike half dollars of this date, of which 880,600 were made at the Philadelphia Mint, were released into circulation in quantity beginning in 1876, after silver and paper currency reached parity in the East and Midwest. Before that time these coins were available only at a premium from exchange brokers. So far as is known, not a single numismatist aspired to save a Mint State coin instead of a Proof. Ordering Proofs was simple, and the Mint had no particular arrangement whereby Uncirculated (as they were generally called back then) coins could be obtained. Indeed, sometimes entire mintages of a given circulation strike issue would be bagged and not released at all until years later. Under such circumstances, it is a wonder not only that a coin like this could survive in Mint Sate, but also survive in Gem condition and with such beautiful, original toning. Outstanding!
