Lot Description
Ex Ashland City Collection, as noted on the insert. A wonderfully CHOICE and pleasing BD-8 1802/1 with the famed Ashland City pedigree. This variety is a Rarity-4, one of 150-200 known in all grades. Identified by the left side placement of the 1 under the 2, Ts from a perfect punch on the reverse, and the second S in STATES at the the right of the cloud. Incredibly well struck from Die State c/b. The needle sharp devices are incredibly well defined on both sides. A wealth of semi-reflective brilliant luster accentuates the ultra clean, smooth surfaces and razor sharp devices. A few minor ticks and a stray line or two can be found with effort under the rich orange-gold patina. Devoid of any serious traces of contact, planchet adjustment marks, hairlines, or signs of post mintage issues of any kind. Ex Ashland City Collection; Superior's September 2006 Pre-Long Beach Elite Coin Auction, lot 2250; unknown intermediaries; Heritage, February 2022 lot 3182. PCGS 31, NGC 15. The most recent example sold in September 2022 for $31,200. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $40,000. RARE higher, fewer than two dozen have ever graded higher at PCGS. This lovely CHOICE early five is a delight for any collector of type coins, early gold pieces, or a box of 20. We expect strong bidding for this beauty. Cert. Number 38734725 PCGS # 8083
