- Thoroughly premium quality for this historic, desirable, yet challenging early San Francisco Mint half eagle issue. This is a lovely coin with vivid color in a blend of deep olive-honey and warmer rose-orange shades. Lustrous for the grade with a frosty texture, a sharply executed strike is also a praiseworthy attribute. Given the incredible rarity of the 1854-S, this is the first collectible half eagle from the San Francisco Mint. The 1855-S can be challenging to locate in its own right, however, as most of the 61,000 pieces produced were lost to circulation in an Old West that was starved for small denomination gold coinage to use in everyday commerce. Anything finer than VF and without significant impairments is a major find in today's market. With the exceptional quality it possesses, the offered coin is earmarked for inclusion in an advanced collection of Liberty Head gold.
