- 1842 Liberty Head Half Eagle. Small Letters. AU-58 (PCGS). CAC.
Exquisite near-Mint preservation for both the type and the issue, this handsome, sharply struck example exhibits attractively original color in deep orange-olive. Essentially full luster remains, the texture softly frosted and undisturbed by significant marks. Although not quite as rare as its identically dated Large Letters counterpart, the 1842 Small Letters is a scarce half eagle in all grades. With most survivors well worn, if not also impaired, this minimally circulated example is a noteworthy condition rarity that represents a particularly significant find for the advanced gold collector.
Provenance: From the Fairmont Collection-Hendricks Set.
PCGS Population: 3; 4 finer (MS-66 finest). CAC Population: 2; 1.
PCGS# 8207. NGC ID: 25ST.
