Lot Description
While 141,000 double eagles fell from the dies at the New Orleans mint in 1850, the first year these large gold coins were struck for general circulation, most went into commercial channels and most of the survivors known today grade lower than the presently offered AU53 and many have surface issues that prevent numerical grading by the three main grading services today: PCGS, NGC, and CAC. A wealth of surviving luster highlights the warm honey-gold patina. Well struck devices retain a bold definition and the surfaces are generally clean for the grade, missing any serious traces of contact, discolorations, or anything that would detract from the outstanding eye appeal; only under close inspection with a powerful glass. Indeed, this one is smoother and cleaner than some AU55s we have seen. PCGS 36, NGC 77. Recent NGC-graded AU53s have sold in the $10,200 to $13,800 range recently. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $20,000. Good luck. Cert. Number 4883054006 PCGS # 8903
