Lot Description

1848-C Liberty Head Half Eagle. Winter-1, the only known dies. AU-55 (PCGS). CAC. Blended medium gold and light olive patina greets the viewer from both sides of this uncommonly well struck, overall sharply defined C-mint five. Remnants of a modestly semi-prooflike finish are discernible to the patient viewer. A scarcer Charlotte Mint gold issue, the 1848-C half eagle is much more elusive than a relatively generous mintage of 64,472 pieces might imply, especially in About Uncirculated and Mint State grades.
