Lot Description
Deep olive and warmer orange-honey colors are seen on both sides of this pleasing quarter eagle. Central detail is suitably bold for a lightly circulated Charlotte Mint gold coin from the 1850s, especially on the obverse. Both sides retain appreciable mint luster that is most intense in the protected areas around the peripheral design elements. A number of light mint-made features in the planchet that resemble adjustment marks are evident in the centers; Doug Winter reported having seen "five or six examples" with these features when he penned the 2008 edition of his reference Gold Coins of the Charlotte Mint: 1838-1861. Scarcer than even the mintage of 14,923 pieces might suggest, the 1851-C has an extant population of fewer than 350 (if not 300) coins in all grades. This handsome AU example would make a pleasing addition to an advanced Southern gold cabinet.
