Lot Description
"1789" Mott Token. Breen-1020, Rulau-E NY-610. Rarity-5. Thick Planchet. Plain Edge. AU-58 (PCGS). Warm antique copper patina blankets both sides of this well struck, overall boldly defined example. The eagle side is drawn trivially to 10 o'clock, the upper left border flush with the top of the peripheral design elements. Softness to the top of the grandfather clock and over much of the eagle is typical of the type, but the clock face is fully outlined and some elements of the shield on the eagle's breast are discernible. A bit rough overall, also typical of the type, yet free of singularly mentionable blemishes. Late die state with a sizeable break at the upper left corner of the clock. This enigmatic type is thought to have been made as late as the 1830s, probably to commemorate the founding of the Mott Company in 1789. Far superior to the typically offered survivor, even of the relatively plentiful thick planchet variant, this premium quality example is worthy of the strongest bids. PCGS# 603.
