1773 Virginia Halfpenny. Newman 9-B, W-1420. 6 Harp Strings, No Period After GEORGIVS. VG-8 (PCGS). 118.2 grains. Deep golden-brown surfaces verge on chocolate-brown with some faint microporosity noted under low magnification. Surprisingly, the present specimen is far finer than the Ford / Boyd specimen offered by us (Stack's) in January 2005, lot 108; Boyd never upgraded his low-grade VG specimen, which was the only example of N.9-B offered in the Ford holdings. Not noticeably marked and well-defined despite the lengthy stay in circulation.
