Lot Description
Generally sandy-gold surfaces with blushes of steely-olive at the peripheries and, most noticeably, in the obverse field before Liberty's chin. Remaining detail is uniformly bold, and uncommonly so in an example of this variety known for spectacular late die states with severely fatigued dies. The offered coin represents the penultimate die state, BB III, which corresponds to the old B-18 attribution for the issue. The reverse shows massive injury at upper right in the form of clash marks from Liberty's bust, which damage caused the die to crack along the border outside the letters in AMERICA continuing clockwise halfway to the eagle's tail.
