Lot Description
Ex D. Brent Pogue Collection, as noted on the insert. A marvelous GEM example of this famous 20th century variety, a coin that due to heavy marketing since its discovery, when C.L. "Cowboy" Franzen cherry picked examples from circulation and noted their discovery in Numismatic Scrapbook. This classic variety was created when a Denver mint employee, in an effort to remove die clashing, polished the reverse die with too much gusto and ended up removing the bison's front leg. Thanks to the discovery of the variety early on, many of these were saved from extensive circulation, and the majority are clustered in the VF to AU range. For the serious collector, lower grade Mint State pieces are available in some quantity, but GEM grade examples are genuinely RARE, and we believe that there is some duplication in the grading service Population data with multiple submissions of the same coin and crossover submissions. This Pogue-pedigreed example is what you would expect of a coin from that world class cabinet. Clearly this coin was carefully selected for its outstanding technical quality and handsome eye appeal. Beautiful iridescent pastel toning graces both obverse and reverse. The subtle gold, lilac, rose, and apricot hues are brought out by a fantastic luster. For a coin of this variety, which often comes weakly defined because of die fatigue and extensive reverse die polishing, this example shows boldly defined design elements. PCGS 50, NGC 55, CAC 26. This coin realized $22,200 in Stack's Bowers' March 2020 sale of the D. Brent Pogue Collection, Part VII. More recently we sold two NON-CAC examples for more: one in March 2020 for $23,500 and one in April 2021 for $22,325. The current CAC CPG value is $28,300 and the PCGS Price Guide is $25,000. PCGS has graded 32 finer, again, we believe there is a number of duplicate submissions trying for a "+" or higher grade. Worthy of any WORLD CLASS set, do not let this beauty get away! Cert.
