Lot Description
Seldom Offered Mint State 1841-D Liberty Head $5 1841-D Liberty Head Half Eagle. Winter 5-D. Die State I. Small D. MS-61 (PCGS). CAC. A fantastic condition rarity from the earliest years of Dahlonega Mint coinage. Frosty honey-orange surfaces reveal tinges of pale olive and rose. The strike is essentially full by the standards of the issuing mint, and the coin displays a very smooth appearance for the grade. Deserving of the strongest bids. Despite being one of the more frequently encountered D-Mint half eagles from the 1840s, the 1841-D is actually quite rare in an absolute sense, with most grading no finer the EF-40. Mint State survivors are so elusive that this is our first offering at this level since 2008. Since it will likely be many years before a similar Condition Census offering for the 1841-D comes along, we cannot stress enough the importance of an aggressive bidding strategy for this lot. Provenance: From the Fairmont Collection-Hendricks Set. PCGS Population (Small D attribution only): 7; 6 finer (MS-65 finest). CAC Population: 1; 3. PCGS# 8204. NGC ID: 25SR.
