- 1820 Capped Bust Dime. JR-6. Rarity-3. Small 0. MS-64 (PCGS). OGH.
Deep toning in charcoal-olive with glints of lighter gold and mauve patina intermingled on both sides. The strike is a tad soft over the central high points, yet bold to sharp elsewhere. Satiny and smooth, a touch more intensity to the luster may have secured an even higher grade for this handsome piece. A perusal of our auction archives for the 1820 JR-6 dime will reveal nothing finer than an AU-58 in recent years. While this is actually one of the more plentiful die marriages of the issue in an absolute sense (per Zack, Scuderi and Sherrill, 2015), it is also a conditionally challenging one. David Quint, in fact, ranks the present example as CC#2 for the variety. The old style PCGS holder uses coin #4492, which is reserved for the 1820 Large 0 Guide Bookvariety.
Provenance: Acquired from David Quint, January 16, 2018. Earlier from Heritage's Palm Beach Signature Sale of November 2004, lot 6185.
PCGS# 4493. NGC ID: 236X.
