Lot Description
THE BOYLSTON COLLECTION, PART IV The 1846 Tall Date is much scarcer overall than the Medium Date counterpart and is an underrated date in the series. This "+" graded GEM is an AWESOME example, among the TOP 3 FINEST graded by NGC. Razor sharp! Every detail of the devices are expertly impressed and boldly defined, from a precision blow from the dies. Struck from a later state of the dies, we note a small retained rim cud at 6:00 relative to the obverse. A frosty satiny sheen glows with an underlying brilliance that enlivens a rich slate-blue, pewter-gray, lilac, pale rose, and warm tan-gold color. There are a few tiny ticks noted under the toning, that requires a magnifying glass to locate. Totally original, this GEM has a fantastic look. PCGS 1, NGC 2, CAC 3. This impressive GEM last sold as NGC MS65 (no "+" and no CAC) in a weak market, the 2016 ANA auction for $8,813; a PCGS MS65 CAC sold for $22,325 in February 2014. Today in MS65+ the Collectors Universe value is $30,000. Just two examples are graded finer at NGC, and this coin should bring a very strong bid when it crosses the block! Cert.
