Lot Description: 150.9 grains. Richly toned surfaces are dressed in gently marbled olive-copper and chestnut-brown. The surfaces are hard and tight, generally smooth, and with some light frost. Slightly darker color toward lower left and upper obverse, lower left reverse, is associated with minor surface build up that is all we can find to place on the debit side. Smooth in hand, nonetheless, and really a handsome piece. High grade Fugios are not terribly rare, thanks to the Bank of New York Hoard, but this die marriage was only a small portion of it. Of the 1,641 examples that remained at the bank when the hoard was first counted in 1948, just 60 examples were of this variety. As Rob Retz noted, "The 11-B is rarely encountered in low grade, almost all known specimens having come from the Bank of New York hoard. Of all the readily available hoard varieties (8-B, 8-X, 11-B, 11-X, 12-X, and 13-X) the 11-B is the least common." This one represents a dramatic late die state, Newman C/E, with heavy clashing on both obverse and reverse.
