Lot Description
1848-C Liberty Head Half Eagle. Winter-1, the only known dies. AU-58 (PCGS). CAC. Faint traces of semi-prooflike reflectivity in the fields give way to a hard, satiny texture elsewhere for this high grade Charlotte Mint half eagle. It is well struck by the standards of the issuing mint; the otherwise sharp detail comes up short only on the hair curls and coronet above Liberty's brow. Handsome olive-apricot in color with very nice eye appeal. A scarcer Charlotte Mint gold issue, the 1848-C half eagle is much more elusive than a mintage of 64,472 pieces might imply, especially in Choice About Uncirculated and Mint State grades, at which levels examples are rare. Provenance: From the Fairmont Collection-Hendricks Set. PCGS Population: 10; 7 finer (MS-64+ finest). CAC Population: 6; 3. PCGS# 8237. NGC ID: 25TT. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
